Is a difficult book for your average ( like me ) wrinkly to get to grips with. In fact I almost bought the audio version first.

Lets have a look at a couple of quotes first – “a novel of dazzling wit and serious purpose. An extraordinary feat of storytelling and breathtaking invention on a grand scale”. Yes that had to be of the back cover…

“long awaited return of both the writer and his finest creation” – “A searing inquiry into justified warfare and the dangers of imposing your ideas of civilization” (?)

“Set in an intricate, yet wonderfully realized world this latest culture novel will pull you in and keep you hooked right up to the explosive finale”

OK. Hyperbole maybe but after wading thru 60 pages of Ian M Banks – Matter I’m not over surprised that Amazon are not at the moment stocking it. They are stocking both The Player of Games (The Culture) and Consider Phlebas (The Culture) both from the mentioned Culture series. If and at the moment its a big IF I get to move forward with Matter I will re open this post and let you know more. I would dearly love for comments from any readers with opinions good/bad/indifferent.

In the meantime I’m looking to buy or borrow both The Player of Games (The Culture) and Consider Phlebas (The Culture) to see if they are as tedious…
